Abstract

Smoking is a serious public health problem that leads to death thousands of people every year, being a variant responsible for many changes in laboratory tests. Thus, the aim of this study was to compare erythrogram of cigarette smokers and hookah smokers. Forty-five subjects participated in this study: cigarette smokers (15), hookah smokers (15) and non-smokers (15). Between October and December 2017, after the volunteers answered a questionnaire about smoking habits, peripheral blood samples were collected and analyzed for red blood cells (RBC) count, hemoglobin (Hb) content and determination of hematocrit (HCT) and hematimetric indices by using manual methods. Analyses were completed in 2018. Regarding the frequency of use, cigarettes are consumed in great amount every day, unlike the hookah, which is usually used only on weekends. However, when compared to control group, both cigarette and hookah smokers showed a significant increase in HCT, Hb and RBC values, but nonsignificant differences in hematimetric indices (p < 0.05).Cigarette and hookah smokers showed a similar and increased erythrogram profile. Although hookah has not been shown to be more harmful than cigarettes, variables such as the frequency and duration of hookah sessions can be directly related to the severity and intensity of changes, demonstrating evidence that it could be more dangerous to health than cigarettes. Therefore, more detailed studies on hookah should be conducted.

Abstract

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common cause of mortality in India. Deaths due to CAD occur 5–10 years earlier in the Indians than in Western countries. Coronary artery disease (CAD) in young women, who are previously considered as low risk group, is on rise now due to various reasons. This study is aimed to find out the prevellance of CAD in young women admitted for evaluation of chest pain. The data of women suspected to have CAD and underwent cardioangiography (CAG) over a period of 1 year was analyzed. The discharge summaries, coronary angiograms and angiogram reports were studied to get information about clinical and angiographic profiles of these women in the “young group” (age < 55 years). Study showed normal epicardial coronaries in 37.5 % of women, nonsignificant lesion in 19% women and intermediate lesion in 10% women and obstructive CAD in 33.5 % of women. There were 18 % women with SVD, 13 % women with DVD and 2.5% women with TVD. Study concludes that there is an alarming increase in the proportion of young women angiographically diagnosed to have significant coronary artery disease.

Abstract

Dengue virus infection has emerged as a notable public health problem in recent decades in spite of having a national programme to control it. This study was conducted on records of dengue cases admitted in department of Medicine, SMS Hospital Jaipur (Rajasthan) in year 2018. Seasonal variation was observed in these cases. Maximum (75.4%) of these cases admitted in September to November with peak in October. Few cases admitted in and around that period, so it can be concluded with this study that Dengue cases spurge in post-monsoon period. Occurrence of most of the cases in post-monsoon period indicates a need for acceleration of vector control programme prior to monsoon.

Abstract

Present study was conducted to compare the different teaching methods i.e. Recitation/ Lecture Method, Questioning/ Socratic Method and Student-Seminar Method in medical students of S.M.S. Medical College, Jaipur. The active students 105 participant were randomly divided into three equal groups viz. Group A, Group B and Group C. Then “pharmacological aspect of anti-cancer drugs’’ was taught using three different methods individually, to three sets of students group. In Group A students were taught by Recitation/ Lecture method, in Group B by questioning/ Socratic Method, in Group C by Student-Seminar method. The response of all the students was recorded for these three different teaching methods on a five- point likert. Responses of students were analyzed by Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS version 16.0 trial version) and Excel 2010 by one-way ANOVA. In present study Socratic Method scored the best as compared to Student Seminar Method which in-turn scored better than Recitation Method. In present study, participants also suggested changing the order in which pharmacology topics are taught. The innovative teaching was found to be useful and feasible as adjunct to didactic lectures. Therefore, the present study suggests that there is need to implement pioneer teaching methods for active participation, more attention, and motivation of students.
